On October 28, 1981, drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist/singer James Hetfield formed the band after Ulrich placed an ad in the LA Recycler newspaper. Soon after, they were joined by Hatfield’s friend and neighbor, bassist Ron McGovern. Later, Dave Mustaine (lead guitar) joined the band, according to the band’s website. Later, Ron was replaced by Cliff Burton.

The guys named the band Metallica at the suggestion of their friend Ron Quintana.

John Zazula offered the band to sign a contract with his label Megaforce Records. And in 1983, Metallica went to New York to record their first album. In New York in April 1983, Mustaine was replaced by Kirk Hammett, and the guys went to the studio.

The result was the album “Kill ‘Em All”, which included such tracks as “The Four Horsemen”, “Whiplash” and “Seek and Destroy”.

In Copenhagen, in the summer of 1984, at Sweet Silence Studios, the musicians and producer Flemming Rasmussen recorded their second album “Ride The Lightning”. It included such classic songs as “For Whom The Bell Tolls”, “Fade To Black”, “Fight Fire With Fire” and “Creeping Death”.

The band’s international status grew rapidly.

In late 1985, work began on the band’s third album “Master Of Puppets”, which was released in March 1986. “Master of Puppets” reached the top 30 albums.

In Sweden, on September 27, 1986, during a night trip, the band’s bus went out of control and overturned, killing Cliff Burton.

In 1991, Metallica released their self-titled album, better known to fans as The Black Album. The band has sold more than 16 million copies worldwide and earned Grammy, MTV, and American Music Awards. The song “Enter Sandman” remains one of the band’s signature anthems, and the ballad “Nothing Else Matters” has touched the hearts of millions.

Metallica was inspired by such bands as Motörhead and Diamond Head, Black Sabbath, Saxon, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Mercyful Fate, Venom and others.

Interesting facts about the band

  • Whiskey in the Jar is a famous Irish folk song. It has been performed by many contemporary bands, including U2 and Thin Lizzy, but Metallica’s version won a Grammy in 1998.
  • The concert tour in support of the Black Album (1991) lasted about 3 years. This is the band’s best-selling record.
  • Metallica appeared in an episode of The Simpsons cartoon series. The episode with the band’s participation was recorded in September 2005.

AC/DC (from alternating current/direct current) is an Australian rock band formed in Sydney, Australia in November 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. Along with such bands as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, AC/DC is often considered the pioneers of hard rock and heavy metal. The musicians themselves classified their music as rock and roll, since its basis is rhythm and blues with highly distorted sound of rhythm and solo guitars.

The band went through several lineup changes before the band’s first album, High Voltage, was released in 1975. The lineup remained unchanged until bassist Mark Evansne was replaced by Cliff Williams in 1977. On February 19, 1980, Bon Scott, the singer and songwriter, died, choking on his own vomit as a result of extreme alcohol intoxication. The band had all chances to break up, but soon a replacement for Scott was found in former Geordie vocalist Brian Johnson. A year later the band released their biggest selling album Back in Black.

The band has sold over 150 million albums worldwide, including 68 million in the United States. The most successful album, “Back in Black”, sold over 22 million copies in the United States and over 42 million outside of the US. Overall, AC/DC is the most successful and well known rock band from Australia. AC/DC is ranked fourth on VH1’s list of 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock and seventh on MTV’s “Greatest Heavy Metal Band Of All Time”.

Title

Malcolm and Angus Young came up with a name for their band after seeing the acronym “AC/DC” on the back of their sister Margaret’s duster. “AC/DC” is an acronym for “AC/DC current,” which indicates that the device is capable of using said types of energy. The brothers felt the name symbolized the raw energy of the band and the energy of live performances, thus the name stuck.

In some cultures, “AC/DC” is slang for bisexual; the musicians claimed they were unaware of this meaning until it was brought to their attention early in their career by a cab driver. Some religious scholars argue that the band name should be understood as “Antichrist/Devil Child” “Antichrist/Death of Christ” or “After Christ/Devil Comes”.

“AC/DC” is spelled, but the band is also known as “Acca Dacca” in Australia. The name has prompted the emergence of tribute bands using consonant names: BC/DC from the province of British Columbia, Canada; AC/DShe, an all-female band from San Francisco; and several others.

Aerosmith is an American hard rock band formed in the late sixties in Sunapee under the name Jam Band.
In 1969, the band moved to Boston and changed its name to Aerosmith. In 1970, Ray Tabano was replaced by Brad Whitford.

The band gained great popularity in Boston, which led to a deal with Columbia/CBS, and in 1973 Aerosmith hit the charts with their debut album. However, the promotional single from this album, “Dream On,” was only at number fifty-nine on Billboard magazine, but when it was re-recorded in 1976, it soared to the top ten.

With Get Your Wings, the band began a fruitful period of collaboration with producer Danny Douglas. By touring all over the country, Aerosmith managed to consolidate the image of a very spectacular band, and also maintain their high position by releasing a very successful album “Toys In The Attic”, which sold more than six million copies.

The fourth LP, Rocks, was certified platinum and sold well on the market. The band maintained their high position as a star with the next records – “Draw The Line” and “Live! Bootleg”, which, however, failed to win fans among many critics who considered Aerosmith a secondary band, for example, in comparison with Led Zeppelin. Tyler’s resemblance to Mick Jagger and the contrast between his personality and that of Joe Perry was the reason for comparing Aerosmith to The Rolling Stones, with whom the former had a good relationship.

In 1978, Aerosmith embarked on a U.S. tour, during which they performed in small towns, resulting in a very busy calendar. Later, there was a not very successful movie “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and although their version of the Beatles’ “Come Together” made it to the Top 30, the relationship between Tyler and Perry deteriorated. Perry left the band after the release of the unsuccessful album “Night In The Ruts” and formed his own band, The Joe Perry Project.

In 1980, guitarist Jimmy Crespo joined Aerosmith, and a year later Brad Whitford decided to form a duo with Ted Nugent’s former musician Derrick St. Holts. The new guitarist Rick Doofey made his debut on the uninteresting album “Rock In A Hard Place”, which failed to come close to the dynamic style of their classic records. In 1984, during a tour, contact was established between Aerosmith and Perry and Whitford, and forgetting about old quarrels, the band played in the best lineup the following year. The album “Done With Mirrors” was a cautious attempt at a comeback, after which Tyler and Perry underwent successful treatment for alcohol and drugs.

In 1986, Aerosmith took part in the recording of their old song “Walk This Way” in the version of the rap group Run DMC, which soon hit the top ten. This collaboration resulted in great international success and new interest in Aerosmith.

The Beatles, a British rock band, was the brightest phenomenon of world culture in the 60s of the XX century. It was founded in the spring of 1956 by 15-year-old John Lennon. It was originally called The Quarrymen.

The “golden” lineup of the British rock band included:

  • John Lennon (piano, rhythm guitar, vocals),
  • Paul McCartney (bass guitar, vocals, piano),
  • Ringo Starr (drums and vocals),
  • George Harrison (vocals and lead guitar).

Brief information about the Beatles

The Beatles or, as it was originally called, The Quarrymen, consisted exclusively of amateur musicians. None of them was a professional musician. The founder of the group, John Lennon, had been singing in a church choir since childhood and knew how to play a few tunes on the harmonica.

In 1957, Paul McCartney met John Lennon in the garden of St. Peter’s Church in Liverpool. A week later, he was already in the band, playing guitar. On McCartney’s advice, 15-year-old guitarist George Harrison joined the band in 1958. The band was renamed Jonny and The Moondogs. They mostly played rock and roll, performing songs composed by Lennon and McCartney, as well as American hits.

The band’s lineup changed frequently, except for Paul, John and George. Soon Stuart Sutcliffe joined them on bass. In November 1959, the band was renamed again to “The Silver Beatles”, after which it was simply “The Beatles”. A year later, the Beatles began looking for a new drummer, and Pete Best joined the band. This lineup was more or less stable for some time. After a successful tour in Hamburg, in 1961, the band recorded their first studio recording.

In May 1962, they found a producer, George Martin, with whom they signed a contract. For unknown reasons, Pete Best leaves this year, and Ringo Starr takes his place.

The first successful record of the British rock band was “Love Me Do”. After its release, the Beatles were recognized as the best band in Liverpool. After the album “Please, Please Me”, in October 1963, a real mania began – “Beatlemania”. But the band began to conquer the musical peak in Sweden. In January 1964, the Beatles toured Paris. The world was conquered, and Beatlemania often turned into popular hysteria.

The last time the band performed was on August 29, 1966. Later, there was only studio work. The last record was “Let it be”. The Beatles broke up in 1970. Each member of the musical project began his or her solo career. The death of John Lennon in 1980, or rather his murder, finally destroyed all hopes for the reunion of the legendary four. But, despite all this, the band did not lose its popularity and love of listeners.

Albums by the Beatles

During their existence, the Beatles sold more than 1 billion CDs and cassettes, they were the authors of 18 albums (13 official studio albums). The most popular of them: “Revolver”, “Magical Mystery Tour”, “Let It Be”, “Help!”, “With The Beatles”, “Yellow Submarine”, “Beatles for Sale”.
